Daylesford Macedon Tourism has supported our region’s tourism industry during this incredibly tough year and we are now moving into the recovery phase over the next few months, safely and sensibly driving a return of visitation to the region. In 2019, the DMT region was a standout performer in terms of visitation growth and our hard work will see this strength continue.
I hope you’re well. We meant to send this email earlier in the week, after the fantastic news that re-opening has begun! A couple of weeks earlier than we predicted too. That has of course meant that we are all busier. I hope that things are turning around for you. DHHS has a ‘source of truth’ page on openings here. You’re probably across what you need to know but it’s a handy resource.
I daresay you were as taken aback as me by the influx of visitors to our region this weekend. It is great to see that people are eager to visit our region and spending their money with our tourism businesses. We are, however, mindful that some members of our community feel vulnerable to a surge in COVID-19 cases.
In this edition, we have a few webinars (yeah we’re sick of them too, but these are good ones) that might interest you.. There are marketing opportunities, grants, and more.
So, ScoMo wants the economy to reopen quickly, but Daniel Andrews is more cautious. While I want visitors to come back and businesses to reopen, and today’s announcement is a step in the right direction, it does not quite open the region for tourism.
The Chair of the Board to which I report recently sent me a great little video on ‘Optimism vs Positivity’ last week. It’s by a guy who you may have heard of, named Simon Sinek, who is truly brilliant. If you haven’t seen his Ted Talks, do yourself a favour. This video is one minute long – have a look here.
With the support of Hepburn and Macedon Ranges Shire Councils, we have partnered with one of Australia’s leading tourism business experts, Nigel Collin. Over a three week period, starting this Thursday, you will have direct access to Nigel, though a closed Facebook Group. He will present a series of online seminars and will provide you access to his online learning modules that consist of short videos and contain templates and a comprehensive workbook to access at any time.
Daylesford Macedon Tourism, together with Hepburn Shire Council and Macedon Ranges Shire Council, is offering businesses within our region the ‘Gap Hunter’ series of FREE online seminars and modules, designed to help create a plan to continue to manage through the Covid-19 crisis and into the future. Hope you’re holding up OK. It’s a weird time. I went for a walk around Lake Daylesford last Sunday afternoon (I love my kids, but there are only so many games of charades or episodes of Bluey that I can handle in a small house on a wet day). OK, it was a bit rainy, but in my 30-minute walk, I saw no one. No people, no cars, nothing. It was quite eerie. And as a community member, I thought ‘good, stay home’.
Firstly, I hope you’re OK. It’s normal if you’re not, and if that’s the case, talk to someone. For the last few weeks, most of us have been working harder than ever, as we come to terms with, and adapt to, the ever-changing challenges. Being busy is good for your mental health. However, as the rate at which changes to policy and regulation slows down, we might find ourselves in a ‘lull’ where we are limited in what we can do to adapt; and business is quieter.
Update #7 coming at you. We will continue to sift through the large flow of advice and support that is coming at us from everywhere and distil it into relevant packages for you. It is remarkably time consuming, so don’t hesitate to share with me any gems that you come across!

First up, call your tax agent or the Business Victoria hotline on 13 22 15 or visit their website. I know that many of you are sole traders and may not be eligible for much of stimulus but this is a pretty good explainer of who is entitled.
A less formal email from me today. As I type this, I have that song from Life of Brian, 'Always look on the bright side of life' on repeat in my brain. It is important to focus on the positives. For starters, no one of us (I hope) are currently nailed to a cross, which is something. While some businesses are doing it tough, there is some good news and I thought I'd remind you of it.
As mass gatherings are banned, and social distancing is encouraged, the mobility of people will be impacted, affecting some tourism businesses. Things are changing by the hour, and various levels of government are doing their best to react with policies and fiscal measures. We will continue to provide you with the most relevant and useful links.
