Dear industry friends,
No doubt you’ll have seen the ‘Roadmap’ to reopening announced by the Premier yesterday. While it’s always good to have a plan, like many of you who have been in touch with me today, I believe that greater clarity on a few points is required.
I am concerned about the caveat imposed on the ‘third step’, which requires new cases to drop below five per day, on average, for two weeks. I’d be rather surprised if Melbourne reaches this point during the two weeks prior to October 26th and we all know how important the Melbourne market is to our industry. Smarter people than me, with better access to data, are making these decisions but the impact on all of us is enormous.
Region to region travel is likely to open up faster than Melbourne (Regional Vic has its own roadmap) but it seems silly that one outbreak in one town (e.g. a meatworks) could completely derail this for the rest of Regional Vic. I’d like to see a clearer strategy for ringfencing and managing known or potential, problem sites to mitigate risk.
I have a number of meetings with key industry bodies over the next 48-72 hours and I’ll be in touch with updates. We are also having an Extraordinary DMT Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday evening to review the additional information that we expect to receive in the next couple of days, and further discuss the way forward.
Stay tuned and rest assured that I’ll be fighting from our corner, as always.
Steve
