Hi All,

Well it’s been a wet start to 2024 but hopefully the weather is now on the improve. Staff shortages are again proving to be a challenge in our industry and this year looks no different. But there is a group that could be worth considering if you haven’t already.

We are now living longer, healthier lives. And in the wellness region of Daylesford Macedon Ranges, it’s probably much longer! Our aging population means that we can’t afford to waste the talent and skills of mature-age workers. So, this industry update is all about giving you the tools to explore this important demographic the next time you are on a talent search.

At the link below we have included a guide for owners and operators of small to medium-sized businesses on investing in our matured aged workforce. It’s a great toolkit with a self-assessment guide, checklists, and tips to help you tap into this pool of experience and knowledge the next time you are recruiting.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has also reported that mature-age workers are less likely to take days off due to illness or to care for others and are less likely to experience work-related injuries than other workers.

In recent taxation changes, pensioners can now earn more without impacting their pension. If you want to target this group for any job vacancies, there is a poster that can assist you in advertising to this potential market.

A little-known fact is that mature age people are the fastest-growing users of information technology. They make great mentors for other staff passing on their years of experience and knowledge.

At Daylesford Macedon Tourism, we were pleased to deliver our youth Kickstarter campaign in partnership with the local government and the Local Learning Employment Networks (LLENs) as part of our Workforce Plan. We are now following the development of the kids that completed the program and so far, many of them are now working in our industry.

Please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us should you have any questions. Steve will be back from a well-earned break in a couple of weeks. Happy New Year!
Cheers,

Paul Matthews
